Memorial Day

I wrote this and posted it a couple of years ago but wanted to re-post it to honor those who serve.

-Plastic Figurines-

Toy soldiers don't bleed.
No need
to repair
their tiny plastic
legs and arms
after pretend warfare.

Toy soldiers don't grieve.
Figurines
don't weep on sleeves
of fellow families.

Toy soldiers don't die.
No twenty-one gun salute.
No black suits.
No folded flag burial
or half mast memorial.

No,
toy soldiers don't die,
grieve
or bleed
like real life
army and marines.
No,
this is not playtime
this is not make believe.

5/25/12

-Only He-

Only He
can mend the cracks
in the glass
of my past.

Only He
puts faith
in my faithless chest
when times of stress
make me trust less.

Only He
can bear this burden
and tear the curtain
to make me free.

Only He
pulled the bullets
from the devil's gun
and claimed the battle won.

Only He
dipped His shoulder
to knock down the boulder
and stride out strong
into the morning sun.

-Evil Undone-

Rape,
murder,
corruption of young.
Lies,
deception,
slanderous tongues.

Someday evil acts
will be undone,
that time is not now
that time has not come.

-Gray And Black-

Are all things gray?
Are all things black?
Backstabbed and bloodied,
dropped
on the railroad tracks.
The beautiful break
and the broken digress
into less and less.
Backward progress
like rust
on a rampage.
Caged by our carelessness.
Diving down
colossal cracks,
the depths of our own
misleading lies.
A dreary demise
as tired eyes
close.
No future
when hope
is left at home.

Are all things gray?
Are all things black?
Pack lightly,
bear the burden.
Backtrack through time.
Put up a fight
to bring back
the white light.

-Heavy-

Weighted words
still not heard,
too heavy,
too hard
to force
through throat.
Like a kick to the gut,
like loss of breath,
mortality never nearer
than when
words of a death
reach the ears
of the hearer.

-Band Aids-

Band aids on bullet holes
won't hold
the blood back
from the gashes
of past attacks.
We are wounded,
broken people,
even we
under the steeple.

///
7/10

We all have issues. Life is complex and messy, not nice and neat. There are no 'quick fixes'.

7/26/10

-Age Gauging Mirrors-

Nothing reminds
of how fast
time has passed
like reflective glass.
Age never clearer
than when I peer
into a time-telling mirror.

7/24/10

-Hollow Words-

I believe
what I speak
about the One I follow,
but my speech
is often
empty and hollow.
Shallow actions
don't meet
with the depths
of my belief,
preferring ease
to standing strong
on two feet.
Watered down words
won't mean a thing
if my life
won't reflect
what I truly think,
if my faith and allegiance
hinge on convenience.

///
7/10

This is just me voicing my struggle to put my actions and life in line with what I say I believe. I can definitely be a hypocrite at times. It's easy to say this and that but unless backed up, words can be weak, actions are what speak.

7/17/10

-Embedded-

Ten black staples
plunged beneath the skin,
fusing as one,
ever slowly
but surely
converging the hatred
and the hater.
Flesh meshing
with bone deep embedded anger.

7/13/10

-Sugar Coated Throat-

These words you spew,
this news
forms a noose
slowly choking me.
Make no excuse
for the truth,
say what you really mean.

-Wolves-

Two wolves wage war
within me.
Love and hate
together
in the same cage.
Struggling,
bleeding,
panting for breath,
one long battle
to the death.
With each deed,
one takes the lead.
Which wolf will win?
The one I continue to feed.

-Deceit-

His lies and deceit
repeat the defeat
of her trust.
Broken eyes leak
from three weeks
in a deep weep.
Invisible bars
keep her inside
as what-if scenarios
play over in her mind.

-Inward Autumn-

Dry leaves crunch
under the weight
of weary shoes.
Right,
left,
forward steps
through the steep of the hill
and the slope of the glen.
November's weather
and brownish hues
move me towards
righting wrongs
and moving on.
Seasons come
seasons go,
some with warmth
some with snow.

///

Although I wrote this in the summer, it felt like autumn in my mind - Reflective, contemplative and somber.

7/2/10

-What If-

What if
the intents of our minds
were displayed
in newspaper headlines?

What if
our past failures
were pasted
on ten thousand highway billboards?

What if
the darkness of our hearts
were put on a hard drive
and converted to video images,
seen by cities and villages
through television broadcasts
viewed by the masses?

If everyone's insides
were outside
for all to see
we might behave
quite differently.

6/30/10

-Lip Pistol-

His verbal lip-pistol
whistled violent verbs
and four letter words,
shattering my
confidence of glass
with each blast
from his gun,
a wicked contorted tongue.

///
6/10

This was inspired by an exhausting work related situation.

6/27/10

-Face Placed Memories-

Proud of laugh lines,
those memories are mine,
kept in the corners of eyes.

///
6/10

I wrote it while spending time with family and thinking about aging, life and laughter.

6/24/10

-Close Call With Burning Walls-

Got to escape the fire,
escape the dark.
The building's burning,
turning order to chaos.
The mile-high smoke plume
proclaiming present doom.
Glowing cinders floating
like buzzing bees.
He's
running and stumbling
over broken beams.
Backdrafts blowing
doors off hinges,
singeing the fringes
of furniture
and fixtures.
Textiles turning
from beauty
to ash.
One last gasp
then he crashes
through the window's glass.
At last,
a fresh breath
of freedom.

-Moods Move Rooms-

It seemed as though
as he spoke
smoke hung in the air.
Then he stormed out,
leaving the room in gloom
and intense silence.
Those who remained
were covered
in a sticky
silly string web
of accusations and threats
of impending doom
coming soon
if their made up minds
remained unmoved.

-The Break Of The Wave-

The crescendo of waves
crash like rolling thunder
under sun-soaked skies.

Every wet drop
in the salty sea
has a chance to be
part of a beautiful breaking wave,
one moment of fame.
The ocean's tide rises
until gravity's command
causes the wave to break,
to curl and collapse.
Lapping the sand
with cool licks
to ease the heat.
Endless wave upon wave
proclaim the peace treaty
between land and sea.
Carry on tidal boundary,
continue on and on
keeping the peace.

And the crescendo of waves
keep crashing like rolling thunder
under sun-soaked skies.

Wrote this a couple months ago while visiting the beach. I was just pondering the relationship that the land and sea share.
